Essential Vitamins and Minerals to Feel your Best During the Summer

Summer is many people’s favourite season. The days are longer and people are exposed to more natural sunlight. Sunlight stimulates the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is associated with mood regulation and promotes feelings of well-being. The abundance of sunlight in summer can elevate people’s mood and make them feel happier. Summer weather also allows for more outdoor activities and recreational opportunities. We engage in activities like swimming, hiking, picnics and sports, which provide a sense of fulfilment and keep our bodies active.

In our previous blog post, we discussed useful information related to summer time nutrition.  In this article, we will focus on the role of supplements during a healthy summer season.

Vitamin C

This vitamin is known for its immune-boosting properties and antioxidant effects. It helps protect the body against free radicals generated by sun exposure, environmental toxins or pathogenic influences. Vitamin C is also very important for our adrenal glands and maintaining energy levels. Citrus fruits, berries, strawberries, kiwi, kale, spinach and bell peppers are excellent sources of vitamin C.

Vitamin D

While your body can produce vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, many people still have low levels of this essential vitamin. Low vitamin D levels may also be linked to low mood. Vitamin D supports bone health, immune function, and overall well-being. Spend some time outdoors in the sun, but remember to protect your skin and consider vitamin D supplements if needed

B Vitamins

B vitamins, including B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B7 (biotin), B9 (folate), and B12 (cobalamin), are important for energy production and metabolism. B vitamins are also important for nervous system and liver support. They can be found in whole grains, legumes, leafy greens, eggs, and lean meats. We would recommend you take a comprehensive B complex formula, so you get all B vitamins in one capsule.

Electrolytes

In hot weather, electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium are crucial for maintaining proper hydration and electrolyte balance. You can replenish electrolytes through foods like bananas, avocados, coconut water and sports drinks in moderation. We recommend you try the following product for its mineralising and alkalising effects on different parts of the body.

Zinc

Zinc is essential for immune function and plays a role in wound healing and DNA synthesis. It is also beneficial for skin health, muscular-skeletal system and digestive tract. It can be found in seafood, lean meats, legumes, nuts, and seeds.

Iron

Iron is necessary for red blood cell production and oxygen transport. Choose iron-rich foods like lean meats, poultry, fish, leafy greens, and legumes. Please check your iron levels (through your GP) first before you consider iron supplementation.

Magnesium

Magnesium plays very important role in so many bodily processes. It supports muscle and nerve function, energy production and bone health. It is crucial for all age groups of people from birth. Include foods such as spinach, almonds, dark chocolate, cacao nibs cashews, and whole grains in your diet to maintain optimal magnesium levels.

Potassium

Potassium is an electrolyte that helps maintain proper fluid balance, nerve function and muscle contractions. Good sources of potassium include bananas, oranges, avocados, spinach, and potatoes.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants like vitamins A, E and selenium help protect the body from oxidative stress caused by sun exposure and other environmental factors. Foods rich in antioxidants include berries, dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds and colourful fruits and vegetables.

Hydration

While not a specific nutrient, maintaining proper hydration is crucial during the summer. Drink plenty of water, keep up your fluid intake and include hydrating foods such as watermelon, cucumbers, freshly prepared vegetable juices and citrus fruits in your diet.

We always advise you consult with a health professional or nutritionist for personalised guidance before you start any of the above supplement recommendations.
